Toast to Britain

Toast artist and Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist Nathan Wyburn recreated the Wills and Kate balcony kiss out of 600 pieces of Hovis toast, after the Royal Wedding topped a survey of Britons' proudest 'British Moment'.

Brits have been revealed as ‘patriotically potty’ ahead of the Royal Jubilee and Olympics in a survey done by Hovis. The survey unveiled that nearly eight in ten (76%) agreed they were proud to be British with a further 60% declaring they felt a greater sense of national pride and patriotism than in the past.

The study, involving 2,000 British adults to celebrate that Hovis is the only leading bread brand that bakes with 100% British wheat and no artificial preservatives* revealed that it was the rolling hills of the beautiful countryside that made most feel proud to be British (51%), closely followed by the ‘British’ sense of humour (45%) which just laughed its way ahead of The Royal Family (43%).

However, it seems that Royals still rule the waves with 30% citing the Royal Wedding as the last time they felt a real sense of British pride and the birth of Wills and Kate’s first born as the most significant future ‘British Moment’ (17%); ahead of Team GB scooping gold medals at the London Olympics (14%).

Ahead of her Diamond Jubilee in June, The Queen reigns as the most influential Briton receiving nearly a quarter of the votes (21%) beating British business tycoon Sir Richard Branson (11%) and Prime Minister David Cameron (10%). However, it’s twice serving Prime Minster and famed orator Winston Churchill who tops the list of the most influential Briton of all time (25%).

The survey also discovered that Brits are a nation of Royalists with more than half (60%) feeling a great sense of pride at having a Royal family and 45% considering the Monarchy as a unique symbol of Britishness – just ahead of the quintessentially British afternoon tea (35%).  Furthermore, 65% admitted Royal events, such as the wedding in 2011, boost feelings of patriotism with six in ten (60%) suggesting the Royal Wedding provided an opportunity for younger Brits to really embrace a huge Royal occasion.
